Here we are again my friends, talking about those pieces that really go the distance in the outfit-making department. Last time we talked about the denim shirt and the multiple ways I find to wear it (and hopefully inspire you to do the same), and today we’ll continue on that trend.

This outfit stemmed from a place of seeking warmth and deliciously baggy layers of clothing. Oh, also I got these amazing waxed jeans and have been wanting to wear them practically every day since then. Pairing a denim shirt underneath any type of sweater can give a little interest factor to any basic navy, black, or gray variation. I also love wearing a Canadian tuxedo (denim on the top and bottom) with a dark and light denim item.

So how are you all wearing your denim shirts? Are you convinced of their outfit potential yet? Let me know!

It goes without saying that the world of fashion is one wrought with frivolities and indulgences, despite the tired reply that we all have to get dressed in the morning. Obviously I wouldn’t have this blog if I didn’t love style, getting dressed, and all the trappings that come with it. I will say though that any opportunity I get to remain smart in my purchases, whether in price or wearability, I’ll take it.

Say hello to the denim/chambray/whatever-you-want-to-call-it, shirt. If you want a go-to item that can enable an endless amount of looks, this is it. I choose to wear this darker variation with this great Phillip Lim for Target skirt, and Baublebar tortoise necklace that I find myself reaching for often.

If you don’t have a denim shirt yet, first of all, where have you been, and secondly, get on that! It’s no longer just a trendy item that will expire in a season or two, instead the denim shirt has proven itself a fashion mainstay.

Not convinced? Stay tuned for another outfit post this week featuring (you guessed it) the same shirt.

Faire Isle Sweater

You know that secret thrill you get from wearing really adorable underthings, or fuzzy socks? That’s how I felt wearing this striped turtleneck underneath this faire isle number. Both things are from high school or college days (fast fashion investment pieces, what?) and have been lingering in my closet asking me to bring them out once again.

Obviously layering is key for the cold temperatures – I stick with thin layers, like tights/leggings underneath fitted pants, and high socks on top. When I can, I like to avoid bulky layers that leave you walking the streets looking like a female marshmallow.

What little fashion thrills are getting you all through the week and keeping you cozy?

Fur coat dilemma

Fur coat dilemma

On days so frozen that you literally can’t feel your feet, you deserve a pick me up. You do! Believe it. In some cases that may mean wearing something a little funky or unexpected. Enter this coat that was passed down to me, but I’ve had the hardest time trying to figure out when to wear it. You would think living and working in NYC I would be liberated and ready to don this pretty, but it’s only remained an occasional piece, until this afternoon.

For some reason when paired with some lighthearted pieces like this woven headband, and classic winter boots, it felt carefree and fresh to me. It also was warm, which was obviously top of mind.

Anyone else out there having a similar fur coat dilemma? I’d love to hear any pairings that have worked for you!

Oh Monday morning, we are not friends. Or in these picture’s case, Thursday morning after a loooong holiday. I can barely pull myself together and out the door in time sometimes, so often looking the part is difficult. There’s not anything novel about this outfit- it’s simple and it works for me. Not only does it employ layers (essential for freezing offices and wheezing furnaces) but it uses different textures which you can claim took a lot of thought to put together (tweeds, suedes, etc.) but doesn’t.

Other trusty recipes for weekday success include:

knit sweater + statement necklace + fitted pants + smoking slippers

shift dress + blazer + textured tights + boots

What do you all fall back on for those trusty work outfits?? Tell me, tell me! Bookmark this post and let me know how your Monday goes please.

To the new year

To the new year

ImageHappy New Year’s Eve! This day always brings a deluge of emotions: thoughts that another year has sailed by without me taking full advantage, and the remaining note of me living another year older. Then there’s always the thoughts of time with family and friends, party dresses, festive munchies and drinks, and so I usually middle out in a contented close to the year.

All that to say, I’m grateful for the closing year (looking at you 2013) even though it held it’s share of sorrows, challenges, and frustrations. I also hold close so many amazing memories of trips taken with friends, achievements I never thought possible, and quiet blessings that remind me I’m not alone in my life.

I have hopeful expectations for 2014, as I hope you all do. Half the joy of living is being open to what’s to come, right? Wishing you all a blessing filled and memorable start to this year, and thanks for going on this Steeped in Style ride with me!

(The holiday scramble is upon us!)

Sorry for the radio silence! This past week has been busy with work, family, and personal things … it always seems to me that the month of December has a million and one things packed in. Amidst all the crazy though, a few things have stuck out to me. Obviously I wanted to share these all with you (duh). Read on for fashion news, my absolute favorite lifestyle website, and a great shopping app.

2014 Pantone Color of the Year – Radiant Orchid. A lovely, vibrant color for the year to come. This shopable post the Zoe Report did gives some inspiration for how this hue will color your closet in the season to come.  Image

Keep App – I know shopping technology is a total first world problem but this one is pretty awesome. Searching for a particular item? Use Keep to hone your search term down to shoppable items that link directly to that site. I looked up “sequined party dress” and got a ton of items.

LEAF TV – I saved my favorite for last. If you’re a 20-something who loves “living, eating, and shopping” this is the perfect video how-to resource for you. LEAF was created to house tons of videos (they’re shoppable too!) about a variety of topics covering everything from how to poach an egg to do the bun 2 ways.

Oh puffer vests – you remind me of middle school, the Gap, and boys with frosted tips. It took a little thought and creativity to pull this look together. It feels fresh to pair weekend essentials like a comfy sweatshirt and black jeggings, with some suede pumps and a beanie. What do you all think? Would you try this look out?

Hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving holiday with loved ones and thanks in their hearts.

Dressed for thanks (Part 2)

Dressed for thanks (Part 2)

Thanksgiving Dress

J.Crew retro dress / Tinley Road dress / Tinley Road dress / Gap pink dress

And we’re back for another edition of Dressed for Thanks! Today we’ll talk about that special outfit for the big day. That’s right, what to wear, this Thursday on Thanksgiving. I’ll be honest, even more top of mind than looking good for me is wearing  something comfortable and non form fitting. Please, I have mashed potatoes and pie to consume. I like a dress that’s colorful and a bit dressy (perhaps in a silk, or other smooth material) in a A-line, sheath shape. I’d rather show off my legs than my full stomach.
Wrap and ShineWrap and Shine
Hive & Honey knit top / ASOS cardigan / Mango cardigan / Bauble Bar deco jewelry / BaubleBar triangle pendant necklace / Navy Luna Drops

Step two is finding a comfy sweater to ease into around 2 pm. Part blanket, part cardigan, this is essential for napping, lounging, and visiting. To keep things a little special and exciting, choose a necklace or pair of earrings with shine and interest.
Finish well

BCBGeneration ankle strap shoes / BC Footwear Take Five / Aldo Nolazco / C-Label Belize/ Nine West Hollyday

To complete this look, pick a pair of shoes that’s easy and effortless. I love an over-the-knee boot with a short dress, or any sort of ankle strap. Use your imagination! I’m really partial to those BCBG ones my self …

I hope this inspires your Thanksgiving Day look – what are you all thinking (or dreaming) of wearing?
