[The Look: Embellished Sheath: The LOFT, Blazer: Vintage, Jeans: Rich and Skinny, Flats: Calvin Klein]

This title is inspired by my dear co-worker and friend who told me my top and blazer looked like a fresh and clean spring field. Apparently I have embodied my longing for warmer weather? Don’t hate it. I wanted to keep this look simple and wearable for work and after hours. I feel like a white blazer is such a crisp way to update other simple pieces and feel a tiny bit fancy. Also, I may be celebrating St. Patty’s day just a little early …. ?

Thanks for enduring these inside shoots too – I can’t wait for the warmer weather (yes, this is a occurring theme of my life) and being able to take some photos outside!

Once again, thanks for following along! xo

When all else fails, I have found some of the most interesting (and unexpected) outfit combinations in my very own closet. For example, all these separate pieces are some of my most trusted favorites, but I never thought to add the two prints together. The pants are a very fine snakeskin pattern … and I did wear this to work might I add. Very appropriate. Just goes to show that we truly always have something to wear, we just need to open our eyes up a bit.

What are some of your most daring, but delightful, closet combinations? Do share.

Just a quick outfit post with a few of my seasonal favorites. I paired a dark lip with my shoes, and complemented it all with this side bag from Target. Always a great place for those trendy pieces that you want a taste of but don’t want to spend a bundle on.

Obviously couldn’t contain my excitement for MARCH any longer. I was giddy all week thinking about this fateful day and all the good things this season will bring. Wanted to celebrate with a ruffled top, and some peach accent on my nails and lips.

Happy weekend ya’ll!

Building your Wardrobe, Spring Edition

Building your Wardrobe, Spring Edition

Hi all, sorry for the hiatus. Today I’m going to walk you through some ‘wardrobe planning’ techniques. So this sounds semi-serious and maybe imposing, but the reality is a little planning can go a long way in terms of our wardrobes.

The technique I’ll share today is super simple. You probably already do part A, without realizing it. All you need is the follow through, part B. Basically, while looking through magazines, blogs, or around you (street style inspo, your best friends, etc.) – identify what draws you to that look, and think of pieces you already own, or should add to your wish list to achieve it.

Here are a few of my current love’s for Spring via my Pinterest board:

French Voguettes

Okay so this is actually a look I love year-round, but I’m especially hopped up on lace-ups for this season. The rest is simple: striped shirt, slim black pants, and you’re effortless chic!

Printed pants

Another effortless look, with a more boho vibe – I am also seriously crushing on printed pants (slim fit, or more pajama like) for a relaxed, cool girl effect.

Pink and red

easy

Flowing separates- loose fitting on the top, and a-line or maxi with slits on the bottom. My feet are literally dying to accompany this look in open toed shoes … my nail polishes are dying to be seen …

So there you have it. Building blocks, friends. Remember to have an open mind when you see a look that captures you. Don’t close yourself off to something you hadn’t considered before. Developing your wardrobe, or trying a new look doesn’t have to be hard, and shouldn’t be mandated only by what’s trendy. Remember that your style is about you.

Here’s to a bright spring, steeped in your own style.

the space between

the space between

I hate to say it, but we have now reached the point where winter sweaters seem dull, itchy, and overdone. To make matters worse, the store windows are already showcasing bright blouses, colored jeans, and ballet flats in candy colors. Sadly, the winter weather stretches on and on, and the calendar perpetually marks January, February …. you get the picture!

What we need is a way to stay current, fresh, and inspired in those in-between weeks (though it may feel like months) baring us from spring.

Here are a few of my recent attempts on this seasonally perpetual dilemma:

photo(2) copy 3

1. Mix mint (or any other pastel would work) and gray for a look that only hints at springy pastels, but stays grounded with the winter neutrals (gray, browns).

photo(3)

2. For a casual office approach, swap tailored shorts and tights for the usual black pants (only attempt if over 30 degrees out) with a complementary blazer.

photo(4)

3. Layer a collared shirt with a loose fitting tunic for a fresh (but not trying too hard) feel – remember to pick patterns including colors in the same family though! In this case I chose blue on blue.

4. Lastly, jazz up a simple look with a statement piece of jewelry/matching top with a simple bottom.

In the face of adversity we must rise to the (fashion) challenge. Am I right, or am I right? And someone please, let me know when spring finally arrives.

In Lieu of Nemo

As I type this the outside world is waking up to a world tucked under a blanket of snow. I’m sorta loving it. I know the practical response now is, “when can I get outside?” and “what am I going to wear.”

I can’t answer the first question, but with some help from our street style friends, I can certainly answer the second.

Major talking points: layer everything you got: sweater, blazer, fur/outerwear (in whatever order you choose), knit scarf or fur collar, sunnies, knit hat or fedora, fitted pants (preferably with room for long underwear?) and black boots.

Stay warm, and stay stylish this weekend! xx

I’ll be honest. As soon as I saw this recipe over on Joy the Baker I had a deep gut-need-to-make-these reaction. And so I finally had the time, and let me tell you these things are good. Hard enough to make you feel accomplished, but definitely not too difficult for a novice cook/foodie.

I also got to roast my first pepper over an open flame. What do you say to that for kitchen adventures?

Roasted Red Pepper, Feta & Basil Skillet Scones

makes 8 servings

adapted from Simply Recipes

4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

1 large egg, beaten

1 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold

1 cup coarsely chopped roasted red peppers*

heaping 1/2 cup coarsely crumbled feta cheese

3 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh basil

1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

*If you’re starting with fresh red bell pepper, it will need to be roasted and toasted first.  Turn a gas stovetop burner on to medium heat.  Place the entire pepper directly over the flame and allow to rest there until blackened and charred.  Use a pair of tongs to flip the pepper so that it can be browned on all sides.  Remove from the flame, cut in half (removing the top and seeds) and use a sharp knife to gently peel away the charred skin.  You can leave a bit of the charred skin in tact for a rustic look and taste.  Coarsely chop the pepper and set aside.

Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Grease a large (9 or 10-inch) cast iron skillet with either olive oil or vegetable shortening and set aside.  Alternately you can use a greased round cake pan if your don’t have a cast iron skillet.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.

Add the cold butter and, using your fingers, quickly break the butter down into the dry ingredients.  Some bits of butter will be the size of small peas, others the size of oat flakes.

In a small bowl, beat together egg and buttermilk.

Add the wet ingredients all at once to the dry ingredients.  Stir with a wooden spoon, working to moisten every bit of flour with the buttermilk mixture.  Before the mixture is entirely incorporated, add red pepper, feta cheese, and basil.  Dump mixture out onto a clean work surface and gently knead together.  If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.  The dough should be moist but still shaggy.  Gather into a 1 1/2-inch thick about 8-inch round.  The dough will be shaggy, that’s better than over-kneading the dough.

Transfer dough to prepared pan.  Use a serrated knife to mark an inch deep X into the dough.  Brush generously with buttermilk and top with cracked black peppercorns.  Place in the oven and allow to bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the top is a deep golden color and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.  If you’re using a regular cake pan instead of cast iron, check the scones after 30 minutes.

Let bread rest in the pan for 10 minutes before removing.  Serve warm.  This bread is best served straight from the oven or warm.  It is best the day it is made.

The finished product! Let me know if you whip this up in your kitchen, and save a piece for me.

What’s not to love?

What’s not to love?

It’s February. We all know what that means. Time to show love to that special someone, your friends and lastly (most importantly in my single girl book) to yourself.  And sometimes that translates into a little retail therapy if you’re anything like me.

If you haven’t heard, Prabal Gurung, will be launching his capsule design collection at Target, starting February 10th. His inspiration for the pieces were the different phases of love, which could be taken as sappy, but honestly these looks are so GOOD. Seriously. Check out my favorite looks below, and see the whole lookbook here.

Which look was your favorite? I’m dying over the black lace-ups, a few of those dresses and the floral shorts ….

So meet you at Target?
